The short story

If you're comparing AirPods Pro 2 vs AirPods Pro 3, you're not alone – it's one of the most common earbud questions of 2026. The AirPods Pro 2 were Apple's most popular earbuds for years, and for good reason. Then in late 2025, Apple released the AirPods Pro 3 with stronger noise cancellation, longer battery, a more secure fit, and a brand-new heart rate sensor built into each earbud. On the surface they look almost identical, but inside, a lot has changed.

⚡ In a hurry? Here's the gist
  1. AirPods Pro 3 – best for workouts, commuting, calls and anyone without an Apple Watch.
  2. AirPods Pro 2 – still excellent, and the smarter choice if you want to save money.

Some newer software features have rolled out to AirPods Pro 2 over time, but the AirPods Pro 3 are built around them from day one with newer hardware.

Noise cancellation: AirPods Pro 2 vs AirPods Pro 3

This is the headline upgrade. Apple claims the AirPods Pro 3 remove up to 2× more noise than the AirPods Pro 2 in its own testing – and around 4× more than the very first AirPods Pro. The new foam-infused ear tips create a better seal, which is a big part of why the cancellation feels stronger in early reviews.

In real life that means quieter flights, quieter trains, and less of the world leaking in at the office. The AirPods Pro 2 are still very good here – they were class-leading in their day – but if you spend a lot of time in noisy places, the Pro 3 are a clear step up.

Quieter commute Better seal Improved Transparency

Sound quality & Transparency

Both pairs sound excellent, and most people would be happy with either. The AirPods Pro 3 have a rebuilt internal acoustic design plus an upgraded Adaptive EQ, which Apple says delivers richer bass and a wider soundstage. Transparency mode also sounds more natural, including the sound of your own voice.

The honest truth: the jump in pure audio quality is real but subtle. You will notice the noise cancellation and battery improvements far more in daily use than the sound difference alone. If sound is your only concern, the AirPods Pro 2 are still worth it and hold up beautifully.

Battery life and charging differences

Battery is one of the most practical wins for the AirPods Pro 3. In Apple's testing and early reviews, AirPods Pro 3 battery life reaches around 8 hours on a single charge with noise cancellation on, compared with about 6 hours on the AirPods Pro 2. That extra time genuinely helps on long flights or full workdays.

🔋

AirPods Pro 3

~8 hrs with ANC on · ~10 hrs with ANC off · longer single-charge life.

🔋

AirPods Pro 2

~6 hrs with ANC on · larger total case capacity (~30 hrs combined).

Note: Using the Pro 3 heart rate sensor during workouts lowers single-charge battery to roughly 6.5 hours – still plenty for almost any session.

Heart-rate sensor: who actually benefits?

This is the feature the AirPods Pro 2 simply do not have. The AirPods Pro 3 heart rate sensor sits inside each earbud and measures your heart rate using infrared light, tracking over 50 workout types through the Fitness app on iPhone.

If you don't own an Apple Watch, this is a genuinely useful addition – accurate heart rate straight from your ears during a run or gym session. If you already wear an Apple Watch, the benefit is smaller, since your watch already does this.

Fit, comfort & durability

Apple redesigned the AirPods Pro 3 with a smaller shape and five ear-tip sizes (now foam-infused), aimed at a more secure, comfortable fit. For workouts and running, they stay in place better than the Pro 2 for many people.

Durability also improved: according to Apple's published specs, the AirPods Pro 3 carry an IP57 rating for better protection against dust, sweat and water, compared with IP54 on the AirPods Pro 2. If you train hard or get caught in the rain often, that is reassuring.

Frequently asked questions

If you work out, commute in noisy places, or take a lot of calls, yes – the stronger noise cancellation, longer battery, heart rate sensor and better fit add up. If you mostly listen in quiet places and already love your Pro 2, the upgrade is less essential.

Absolutely. The AirPods Pro 2 still deliver excellent sound, strong noise cancellation and all the core Apple features like Spatial Audio and Adaptive Audio. They remain a great pair of earbuds, especially at a lower price.

Less so. If you already wear an Apple Watch during workouts, it already tracks your heart rate, so the in-ear sensor overlaps. The feature shines most for people who don't wear a watch but still want accurate heart rate data.

With noise cancellation on, the AirPods Pro 3 last around 8 hours per charge versus about 6 hours on the Pro 2. With ANC off, the Pro 3 reach roughly 10 hours. Using the heart rate sensor lowers this to about 6.5 hours.
