How to Erase Your iPhone Before a Trade-In, Step by Step
HandySwap's trade-in page asks you to erase your data before shipping. Apple's guidance shows how:
- Back up your iPhone and transfer your information to your new phone.
- Unpair your Apple Watch, if one is paired.
- Sign out of your Apple Account and turn off Find My iPhone (details below).
- Erase everything: go to Settings, General, Transfer or Reset iPhone, then Erase All Content and Settings.
- eSIM: if your iPhone uses one, choose the option to erase the device and the eSIM profile.
- SIM and carrier lock: remove your physical SIM card and make sure the phone is unlocked.
Remove Your Apple Account and Turn Off Find My iPhone
On iOS 26, open Settings, tap your name, tap Sign Out and choose to erase the device. HandySwap requires Find My iPhone to be turned off, and Apple explains that erasing your iPhone also turns off Find My and Activation Lock.
Erase, Don't Delete Item by Item
Apple warns that while you are signed in to iCloud, manually deleting items permanently removes them from iCloud and your connected devices. Back up first, then use Erase All Content and Settings.
What Happens After You Ship Your iPhone?
The trade-in page describes this process:
- Prepaid label only. Use the free DHL label HandySwap provides. Other couriers and the post office are not covered, as HandySwap cannot track those packages.
- Updates. HandySwap updates you by email throughout the process.
- Revised offer. If the condition differs from your description, accept the revised offer or have your phone returned free.
- Payout. After inspection, the payout goes directly to your bank account.
Can I Cancel a Trade-In After Shipping?
Yes. Keep your phone if you have not shipped it. If you have, contact customer service before the sale enters the payment queue. That is why erasing comes first: your data is gone before the phone leaves you.
