Introduction

Whether you just unboxed a brand new iPhone 17 Pro Max or you're still getting the most from an iPhone 13 — two features every iPhone owner should master are the camera and screen recording. Apple has made enormous strides across five generations, and understanding exactly what your model can do changes how you use your phone every day.

This guide covers every major iPhone from iPhone 13 through to iPhone 17 — camera capabilities, screen recording tips, model-specific tricks, and hidden features most users never discover. Use the navigation bar above to jump straight to your model.

💡 How to use this guide: Screen recording works the same way on all iPhones running iOS 14 or later. We've written the setup steps once — clearly — then each model section focuses on the unique camera features and tips specific to that generation. Jump straight to your model using the links above.

📱 How to Screen Record on iPhone — Step by Step

Screen recording is built into every iPhone running iOS 14 or later. Before you can use it, you need to add it to your Control Centre — a one-time setup that takes about 30 seconds.

Step 1 — Add Screen Recording to Control Centre

⚙️ One-time setup
1

Open Settings

Tap the Settings app on your home screen.

2

Tap "Control Centre"

On the latest versions of iOS, tap Add a Control to open the controls gallery. On older iOS versions, you'll see a list under More Controls.

3

Add Screen Recording

Find Screen Recording and tap the green + button. Done — it now appears in your Control Centre every time.

Step 2 — Start Recording

▶️ Recording your screen
1

Open Control Centre

Face ID models (iPhone X and later): swipe down from the top-right corner of the screen.
Home button models (iPhone 8 and earlier): swipe up from the very bottom of the screen.

2

Tap the Record button

Tap the circle-within-a-circle icon. A 3-second countdown gives you time to navigate to the screen you want to record.

3

Stop and save

Tap the red status bar at the top of your screen and confirm Stop — or return to Control Centre and tap the red record button. Your video saves automatically to the Photos app.

🎙️ Pro tip — record with audio: Long-press the Screen Recording icon in Control Centre before tapping Start. A menu appears — tap the microphone icon to enable your voice. Perfect for tutorials, commentaries, and walkthroughs.

⚠️ Good to know: A few app types restrict screen recording — if the recorded content appears black, this is intentional (see FAQs below for details).

Photographic Styles

Apply a permanent tone preference (Warm, Cool, Vibrant, Rich Contrast) that adapts intelligently to each scene — far more powerful than a basic filter.

Macro Photography (Pro only)

Shoot extreme close-ups as close as 2 cm — iPhone 13 Pro automatically switches to the ultra-wide lens for stunning macro detail.

🎥

ProRes Video (Pro only)

The first iPhone to support ProRes — the professional video format used in film production. Shoot up to 4K at 30fps for colour-grade-ready footage.

Screen recording on iPhone 13

Follow the universal steps above — all steps apply. The A15 Bionic chip ensures smooth, lag-free recordings even during demanding games or multitasking sessions.

The A19 Pro chip makes recordings completely fluid during even the most demanding tasks — 4K video playback, intensive gaming, and heavy multitasking all run without a stutter.

Certain apps deliberately block screen recording for security or copyright reasons. This includes streaming services like Netflix and Disney+, as well as most banking and payment apps. The recording will save, but the app's content appears black. This is intentional behaviour enforced by the app — not a bug on your iPhone.

The iPhone 17 Pro Max is the best camera iPhone ever made — three 48MP cameras, 8× optical-quality zoom, Dual Capture, and the new 18MP Center Stage front camera.
