iPhone 17e Size, Weight and Build Quality
The iPhone 17e size is 146.7 × 71.5 × 7.8 mm at a weight of 169 grams. That makes it more compact and around 8 grams lighter than the iPhone 17 — and one of the few current smartphones you can still comfortably operate one-handed. If you're deliberately looking for a manageable device, the 17e is one of the last of its kind.
The 6.1-inch OLED resolves at 2532 × 1170 pixels and is pin-sharp. There are two limitations, though, and both are visible in daily use. First: the refresh rate stays locked at 60 Hz. The adaptive 1 to 120 Hz of the pricier models isn't here, so scrolling feels correspondingly less fluid. Second: the front still carries the classic notch rather than the Dynamic Island. Visually, the front of this phone looks exactly like the iPhone 16e.
On durability, though, Apple has done real work. The iPhone 17e uses Ceramic Shield 2 on the front — three times more scratch-resistant than its predecessor, according to Apple — combined with an aluminium frame and IP68 certification down to 6 metres for 30 minutes. That's the same front protection as the iPhone 17 Pro. This is one place Apple explicitly did not cut corners.
iPhone 17e Camera Review: Where the Limits Are
The iPhone 17e camera is the point where it's decided whether this device suits you. On paper it sounds strong: 48 megapixels, ƒ/1.6, optical image stabilisation, plus a 12 MP 2× zoom cropped out of the centre of the sensor. That works well — in daylight, the 17e takes very decent photos with Apple's typically neutral colour rendering.
But you need to know about two limitations. First, the ultra-wide camera is missing entirely. No landscape panoramas, no tight interiors, no group shots from close range. That's the most noticeable gap in everyday use — and a lens that even cheaper Android devices now include as standard.
Second, the sensor fitted here isn't identical to the one in the pricier models. As the detailed camera test from GSMArena shows, the 17e carries over the iPhone 16e's camera system essentially unchanged. The image sensor is closer in size to the one higher-tier models use for their ultra-wide optics. In good light this barely registers. At dusk, indoors and in backlit scenes it does: detail softens and noise creeps in sooner.
The front camera also stays at the predecessor's level: 12 megapixels, ƒ/1.9. Two points still speak in favour of the cheaper model: the 17e has the larger battery and is lighter. If you want maximum runtime in a compact body, you get it in the entry-level phone of all things.
But be honest with yourself about the rest of that table. For roughly €130 — around 19% more — the iPhone 17 adds a 120 Hz display, a second camera, a far brighter screen and a much better front camera. At the original €250 gap that was a real decision. At €130 it mostly isn't. Unless the compact size and battery are your priority, this is the upgrade to take.
iPhone 17e vs iPhone 16e: Is the Upgrade Worth It?
Short answer: no, if you already own a 16e. The display, battery, camera system and front camera are all effectively unchanged. Apple improved four things:
- MagSafe and Qi2 at up to 15 W. This is the most important addition. The iPhone 16e had no magnet ring at all and charged wirelessly at a meagre 7.5 W. That made the entire MagSafe accessory ecosystem unusable.
- A19 instead of A18. One chip generation more headroom — relevant mainly for how long the update window runs, less so for noticeable speed.

For 16e owners, none of that justifies buying a new phone. For anyone coming from an iPhone 11, 12 or 13, the jump is substantial: more battery life, considerably more processing power, Apple Intelligence, and an update horizon reaching well into the 2030s. If you still have your old device, you can trade in your old iPhone and bring the purchase price down directly — which, given the narrow gap above, may well put the iPhone 17 within reach.
iPhone 17e Case and Accessories: What Fits?
You'll need to buy a new iPhone 17e case — cases from the iPhone 16e don't fit properly. The body dimensions differ only marginally, but the cutouts sit differently, and crucially, older cases lack the magnet array.
And that's exactly what to look for when buying: because the 17e now supports MagSafe, only a case with integrated magnets is worth having. Without a magnet ring in the case, magnetic alignment stops working reliably — charging stands, car mounts and battery packs lose their main advantage.
